Visit Lancaster

Lancaster, located in the Northwest of England, is a historic city that serves as the main cultural hub and the economic and commercial centre of the City of Lancaster. It sets on the River Lune and just inland from Morecambe Bay.

Lancaster’s roots reach back to Roman Britain, when a fort was established on the hill where Lancaster Castle now stands, giving the city its name from the River Lune and “castre” meaning fort, as recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. It later developed into a medieval market town and borough with a charter in 1193, and its castle became a defining landmark through centuries of conflict and justice, including the 1612 Pendle witch trials. In the 18th century Lancaster grew as a busy port, and fast forward to today it is a service-led city shaped by heritage, education, and tourism.

Lancaster’s heritage is easy to see in a walkable city centre, with major sites close together. Lancaster Castle dominates the skyline and remains central to the city’s civic identity, while Lancaster Priory Church reflects centuries of community life. Lancaster Cathedral adds further architectural character, and the Ashton Memorial in Williamson Park provides wide views across the city and a sense of its late nineteenth and early twentieth century confidence.

Modern Lancaster combines this historic setting with an active university and cultural scene. Its economy is supported by the University, retail, professional services, hospitality, and cultural events, with the student community adding energy to the city centre. With Morecambe Bay nearby and the Lake District within easy reach, Lancaster is also a convenient base for countryside and outdoor trips across the wider North West.
